FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
BOMB SQUAD CALLED IN TO REMOVE EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS
Ripon, CA: On 06-22-13 at approximately 1234 hours, Ripon officers were dispatched to a business in the 100 block of N. Wilma Ave. regarding a suspicious person. Upon arrival, officers contacted a suspicious person in a gray Toyota Tacoma pickup. While speaking to the suspect, officers located Marijuana, suspected marijuana hash and components associated with the manufacture of an improvised explosive device in the vehicle.
Out of an abundance of caution, the area was secured, the Manteca Police Department Bomb Squad was contacted, and the Ripon Fire Department was advised. Businesses and residences in the immediate area were advised of the situation, and voluntary evacuations were completed.
Bomb squad technicians responded to the scene. The vehicle was examined and technicians located and removed the suspicious items in question. Technicians advised Ripon Police personnel that the items located in the vehicle were consistent with components used in the construction of a destructive device. A completed destructive device was located. The dangerous materials were taken away from the scene by the bomb squad for destruction. In order to ensure that additional destructive devices could not harm the public, search warrants were served in Waterford, and in Modesto. The Stanislaus County Bomb Squad assisted in the service of these search warrants. Ripon investigators located additional evidence as a result of these warrants.
Julian Red Stehle (18) of Waterford was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on felony charges that included manufacturing a destructive device, possession of a destructive device, possession of a controlled substance, and manufacturing a controlled substance.
